History
Proudly serving the residents of the vibrant City of Huntington Park and neighboring areas, the Huntington Park Library was founded in 1913 and originally housed in the City Hall. As the library continued to grow, it moved to larger locations in 1924 and 1931. The present library building in the Civic Center was dedicated in 1970. A significant sculpture designed by artist Tom Van Sant, “Flight Form,” was also dedicated in 1970 and is suspended from the second floor ceiling. An active Friends of the Library group was formed in 1996 to promote and support Library services to the community.
Collection
The Huntington Park Library collection consists of 156,551 books, 106 magazine
subscriptions, 5,977 audio recordings, more than 5,960 video cassettes, and 560
telephone directories as well as pamphlets, maps, college catalogs, and local
history clippings. The library specializes in literature, poetry and English
as a Second Language (ESL). Our library has several specialized collections:
a Spanish book collection located on the first floor and the
American Indian Resource Center. The
American Indian Resource Center is an ethnic resource
center. The AIRC collection is the largest public library collection in
the U.S. that focuses on American Indians. AIRC materials include
audiocassettes, books, compact discs, films, magazines, microfilm,
newsletters, newspapers, and videocassettes. AIRC has the only complete
sets of Indian Census Records (1885 - 1940) and Records of the Indian
Claims Commission (1946 - 1977) outside of the National Archives in
Washington, D.C.
Services
The following services are offered by the Huntington Park Library:

electronic full-text magazine collection. The adult area features 7 public
access computers. The library has bilingual adult, family, and children's
programs on a regular basis. Hispanic Heritage
Month, which begins every September 15, features special cultural
programs.
Facilities
The library is a three story building, with a total of 35,384 square
feet. On the second floor of the library is a significant sculpture
suspended from the ceiling. It is named "Flight Form." It was designed
by Tom Van Sant and dedicated in a public ceremony on July 20, 1970.
