César E. Chávez

Cesar Chavez

Photographer: George Rodriguez

The following collection honors the legacy and name of César E. Chávez. The collection paints a portrait of his life's work within the California labor movement, his humanitarian/non-violent philosophies and unique distinction as one of the world's most respected civil rights advocates.

César E. Chávez Day

Adopted by the State Legislature in 2001, the first César E. Chávez Day in the State of California was celebrated in recognition of César Chávez as an American hero - a leader who represented the values of hard work, democracy, justice, education, service to others, family, and respect as president of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO.

In 2017, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declared a holiday in recognition of César E. Chávez's birthday to be observed on the last Monday in March.
