What Can I Do? If nothing else, the life of César E. Chávez can serve as an inspiration to those who believe that they're too insignificant to matter, that the life they've been born into is the life they're destined to lead, that fighting to improve one's conditions is an impossible task, and that success can only be measured by how much you earn. Chávez grew up as one of the poorest of the poor, no college degree, no high school diploma, a Mexican-American discriminated against in a thousand ways. It would have been easy to "be realistic" and accept things as they seemed destined to be-follow the harvest, break your back for a miserable wage, and don't make trouble. Chávez chose the unrealistic way instead. The life he led was by no means easy. There were failures and disappointments in his life. He was loathed at times by the very people he tried to help. Occasionally his life was in danger-striking farm workers were beaten and murdered during the disputes in the 60s. Fighting for what you believe to be right can be a lonely, frustrating campaign with victories whose glory fades too quickly and defeats whose pain lingers so long because you care so much for the cause you're fighting for. Seeing injustice, recognizing the effort needed to fight it and the small chance of success and electing to do nothing can make one appear practical and realistic. Seeing injustice, recognizing the effort needed to fight it and the small chance of success and acting anyway can make you a hero. Be like César, be a hero.
