Sorensen Library Closes for Construction of New, Larger Facility

Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina today announced the Sorensen Library, 11405 E. Rose Hedge Dr., Whittier will be closed from November 27, 2008 to summer 2010 for construction of a new, larger facility.

“The new facility will be the County’s newest eco-friendly ’green’ library,” said Molina. The community and the Friends of Sorensen Library were a part of the planning of the new library and we look forward to celebrating its reopening with a bigger and nicer facility in the summer of 2010.”

The new 10,655 square foot library will replace the existing 1,048 square - foot facility. It will be part of the County’s Sustainable Design Implementation Program, which uses the LEED-New Construction rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The USGBC has four certification levels (Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum) awarded according to achievement as evaluated by points using the LEED scorecard. The new Sorensen Library will meet the LEED Silver standard.

The library will be open to the public in summer 2010 and include plenty of space for reading, an expanded computer training room, teen area with multimedia listening and viewing stations, self-checkout stations, homework center, a large community meeting room, a Family Place program, and additional parking.

While the library is closed, library staff will present regular Preschool Storytimes every Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Sorensen Park Activity Building, 11419 Rose Hedge Drive, Whittier, beginning January 2009.

During the closed period, customers may return library materials to an outside book drop at Sorensen Library, or to any other County library.

Library service will be available at these nearby County libraries:

Los Nietos, 11644 E. Slauson Ave., Whittier

Pico Rivera Library, 9001 Mines Ave., Pico Rivera

The project is being made possible through the generosity of Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina of the First District, and the County Library.
