The Carson Library, 151 E. Carson Street, Carson celebrates the completion of the Family Place training room at the Carson Library on Friday, September 25, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. – Noon. The keynote speaker for event will be Rosemary Wells, noted children’s author, illustrator and early childhood literacy advocate. Ms. Wells will discuss Booking Up Our Kids, a presentation for policymakers and advocates for early care and education promoting early literacy skills and the importance of reading to young children.
The Family Place Training room at the Carson Library was made possible by funding from First 5 LA, a child advocacy organization. The training room will train librarians on how to create and maintain a Family library.
A $1 million grant from First 5 LA is funding the County of Los Angeles Public Library and other public libraries in the community to develop 20 Family Place Centers and a Carson training center. The grant is in support of a California State Library initiative to expand Family Place statewide. It is also in support of First 5 LA’s Best Start LA initative, which seeks to build resources in communities and provide access to activities that promote the health, growth and care of pregnant women, families and children age 3 and under.
Family Place Centers are specialized library areas focused on early childhood information, parent education workshops, socialization and family support. First 5 LA’s funding includes training of library staff, enhancements of a family welcoming space within the library, and expansion of the collection of books and materials for early childhood, parenting, and child care.
The Family Place program is filling an important gap in the County of Los Angeles Public Library’s services to families with infants and toddlers. To learn more about the Family Place program, visit the County Library Web site at www.colapublib.org.
