Community invited to gather at the Sorensen Library as
winning name of “Name the Rabbit” Contest is announced on August 6, at 3pm.
The new 10,655 square foot library opened in November 2010 and replaced the existing 1,048 square-foot facility. The Sorensen library features a unique site-specific sculpture by artist Gerald Heffernon for the exterior courtyard of the facility. The cast bronze artwork depicts an adult rabbit reading to four young bunnies.
The artist created a playful work that explores themes of literacy, family and community as well as contemporary culture and humor.
The "Name the Rabbit" contest encouraged community involvement with naming of the adult rabbit in sculpture. A total of 205 entries were received from June through July 2011.
The event will include "The Magic of Reading" with Rafael and Katia and the winning name in the "Name the Rabbit" contest will be magically revealed at the performance.
The $8.3 million Sorensen Library project was funded by Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina.
The Sorensen Library is part of the County of Los Angeles Public Library. For more information, please call (562) 940-8415 or visit the County Library Web site at www.colapublib.org.
