History
The Las Virgenes Library was founded in 1916 and was located for a brief
period, at the Las Virgenes Grammar School. The library then moved to Liberty
School which was one of four schools in the area. Shortly after 1920, the
school and the library moved to Chesebro Road. The library was managed during
that time by Mrs. Wright. Later, the library moved to the Cornell School.
The library moved again on December 8, 1970 into a 7,500 square foot storefront
facility located on 29130 Roadside Drive. On October, 27, 2001 the library
became the "Agoura Hills" Library moving to a brand new 17,772 square foot
facility at 29901 Ladyface Court. The library is part of the new City Hall
Civic Center.
Collection
The collection comprises approximately 122,349 adult and children's books;
152 magazine and newspapers; an extensive audiovisual collection of 8,207 audio recordings including books-on-tapes, and 9,894 video recordings including DVDs which consist of foreign films, classics and documentaries; California telephone
directories; pamphlets; and local history materials. In addition, the
library has the following special collections: Holocaust; Large Print;
Mystery (specializing in female writers); and material in other languages
including Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, Farsi and Spanish. The
Friends of the Library also offer a
rental bestseller collection and rental DVD program.
Services
Available to the public are CD-ROM workstations; Internet (some with word
processing) workstations; & two photocopiers. Children's programs featuring
Toddler and Preschool Storytimes and Summer Reading. The Friends of the
Library have an on-going book sale in the Book Cellar bookstore every Saturday
from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Outlying areas are serviced by the
Las Virgenes Bookmobile.
Facilities
The 17,500 square foot library, conveniently located off the Kanan Road exit
or Reyes Adobe Road exit from the Ventura Freeway on Agoura Road & Ladyface
Court. The facility has a copy center, computer center, 2 conference rooms,
and a Friends of the Library bookstore & browsing area.
