Friendly El Monte, the End of the Santa Fe Trail, was incorporated in 1912. The city was once home to Gay's Lion Farm during the 1930s and famous for the roaring lion on MGM's logo.
The El Monte Library was founded in 1890, and joined the Los Angeles County Public Library in 1913. It has been at its present location since 1967.

El Monte City School District: The site includes information on the eighteen schools serving over 12,000 children. The schools are organized as K-4, K-5, K-6 and K-8.
La Historia Society: Formed in 1998 to preserve the rich cultural history of El Monte and South El Monte's nine historical barrios, the Society opened the La Historia Society Museum/Museo de Los Barrios in 2001.
