History
The Hollydale Library was founded in 1929, apparently in a house on Paramount
Boulevard. Later the library was moved to a commercial building on Main
Street near Garfield Avenue. In 1945, the library lost its lease and was
closed. It was reopened in May 1948 in the same building with a larger space.
Finally, a permanent home was built at the present location. The new library
building opened for service in November 1966.
Collection
The current collection totals 58,970 volumes, 78 magazine and newspaper subscriptions, 3,548 audio recordings, and 3,813 video and DVD recordings. The library provides materials in English and Spanish.
Services
The Hollydale library provides library services to the Hollydale area of the city of South Gate. Services include: Reference service, 2 public access Internet computers, access to the entire County Library collection and to online reference databases and a coin-operated photo-copier.
Children's activities are held Thursday and Saturday at 2:30 pm, and Children's films or cartoons are shown every Wednesday at 3:30 pm. Other general interest activities include the Scrapbook Club which meets on alternate Friday's at 2:30 pm.
Facilities
The Hollydale Library is the second of two libraries in the city of South Gate
and serves the South Gate residents who live east of the Los Angeles River
and the Long Beach (710) Freeway. This 4,800 square foot building is located
in the Hollydale shopping area. The other South Gate Library is the
Leland R. Weaver Library.
