History
The La Crescenta Library was the 78th branch of the Los Angeles County Public Library system when it first opened in November 1914. The first small collection was housed in a local church building with Belle F. Miller as Branch Supervisor. The library subsequently moved several times - once into a school house and later into a local store front, one of which was the Sears building in 1926. By 1932, the library had settled into a building at 3930 La Crescenta Avenue. As the population grew in La Crescenta, so did the demand for a new building. The County finally found an appropriate site, and the library opened in March 14, 1963 with Caroline E. Lehmann as Branch Supervisor. Many librarians have served the La Crescenta community over the years including Emma MacRae from 1925-1927, Evelyn Stewart in the 1970's, and Mary B. Darrow in 1992.

Collection
The current collection, includes over 81,840 books; 4,500 audio recordings including compact discs; 3,560 video recordings; and 82 magazine and newspaper subscriptions. The La Crescenta Library also has materials in Korean, Armenian, Farsi, Chinese, and Spanish. Special collections include a local history collection, the San Gabriel Mountain collection, and local business information.

Services
Services available to the public include basic reference services, an online library catalogs that provide access to the entire County Library collection and to online reference databases, public access Internet computers, children's programs; a Homework Center, school tours; class visits; coin-operated typewriters and copiers; a Friends of the Library Book and Video Rental Collection; and an annual June book sale organized by the Friends of the La Crescenta Library. The regularly scheduled Summer Reading Program includes exciting entertainment and incentives for children to become life-long readers.
