History
The La Mirada Library was established in 1915 in a one-room schoolhouse
that belonged to the Norwalk School District. It soon received supplemental
service from the Los Angeles County Library. From 1958 to 1971 the library
was housed in a leased storefront in the La Mirada Business Center. The
present library building was dedicated on July 1, 1971, in the La Mirada
Civic Center.
Collection
The library collection includes 135,401 books, 145 magazine and
newspaper subscriptions, microform and pamphlet files, maps, 6,208 audio
recordings, 4,973 videocassettes, microforms, telephone books, and a
local history collection. Materials are available in many languages.
Services
Services include Reference Services, public access Internet computers,
online library catalogs that provide access to the entire County Library
collection and to online reference databases; a microform
reader/printer; adult and children's programs,
and coin-operated typewriter and coin-operated photocopiers.
Facilities
The 15,851 square foot building offers handicapped access and free parking.
The library is divided into children's and adult areas, and a public meeting
room with a capacity of 145. Four display cases are available to the public.
