History
The Newhall Library was established by the County of Los Angeles Public Library — referred to then as the Los Angeles County Free Public Library — in March 1916 in a store along what is now known as San Fernando Road. Between 1916 and 1957, the Newhall Library was housed in several storefronts along San Fernando Road. In 1957, the library moved to its current location at the corner of Walnut Street and 9th Street. At the time, the building was considered to be a "showpiece" for the County.

Collection
The current collection is comprised of 81,117 books; 5,404 audio recordings including audio books; 4,686 video recordings and DVD's; and 73 magazine and newspaper subscriptions. The library also has a local history collection.

Services
Services available to customers are an online library catalog; children's and adult programs; a coin-operated copier; and a Friends of the Library video-rental collection. The library has two public access Internet computers.

The following children's programs are available:

  • Baby Storytime: A participatory program of music, rhymes, simple sign language and books for parents/caregivers and children 6-24 months old. (30 minutes)

  • Toddler Storytime: A participatory program of books, fingerplays, flannel board stories, puppets, songs and nursery rhymes built around a weekly theme. For parents/caregivers and children 2-3 years old. (30 minutes)

  • Preschool Storytime: Includes school-readiness concepts using art projects, books, puppets, fingerplays, flannel board stories, songs and rhymes. For parents/caregivers and children 3-5 years old. (45 minutes)

  • Puzzle Day: Mazes, jigsaw, math, and word puzzles are available throughout the day every Thursday. Preschool and elementary school children receive a prize for completing puzzles.

  • Book Club for 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders: Children read a book - or listen to it read aloud - and enjoy snacks, games and art projects connected to the book.

  • Monthly After School Events: Events feature storytellers, musicians, magicians, animal and science demonstrations and more. These free events are for children in kindergarten to 6th grade.

Facilities
The library, with an area of 4,842 square feet, has an adult area and a children's area. The Newhall Library also houses the offices for the Santa Clarita Bookmobile.
