History
On February 22, 1973, the City of Lakewood, in cooperation with the County of Los Angeles Public Library, opened the George Nye, Jr. Library. The library is named for Lakewood Mayor George H. Nye, Jr. who died while serving in office in May 1971. The library is the second in the city and serves the population of the eastern area of the city which includes eight elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. An active Friends of the Library group was formed in 1972 and supports both Lakewood libraries - George Nye, Jr. and Angelo M. Iacoboni.

Together the City of Lakewood and the County Library, with help from many library supporters including Fourth District Supervisor Dean Dana, renovated the library in 1992. In 2002, the library was rearranged to create an enclosed picture book area with stuffed animals and rugs, a Homework Center with Internet and word processing computers and a "New" Book reading area. New furniture was provided by the County Library and the Friends of the Lakewood Libraries.

Collection
The current collection includes 83,938 books, 86 magazine and newspaper subscriptions, 3,474 audio recordings which includes a book on cassette and CD collection and 3,427 video and DVD recordings. The library has materials available in English, Spanish, Korean, Tagalog and large print. The Friends of the Lakewood Libraries have a Rental Collection.

Services
The George Nye, Jr. Library provides basic reference services, public access Internet computers and children's programs. The library offers a coin operated photocopy machine and online library catalogs that include access to the entire collection of the County Library as well as to online reference databases. A Homework Center with a computer workstation is available for children. The library is also a Family Place site.

Facilities
The George Nye, Jr. Library is the smaller of the two libraries in the city of Lakewood; the other library in the city is the Angelo M. Iacoboni Library. This 7,707 square foot building is located in the Mae Boyar Park near the San Gabriel (605) freeway. Disabled access is available. There is no meeting room facility.
