History
Thanks to a generous grant from the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors,
the Urban Outreach Bookmobile began service in March 2001 in order to bring the
Library's services to urban residents of Los Angeles County. The bookmobile
service area, encompassing three supervisorial districts, serves the cities
and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles, Hawthorne, Compton, Montebello,
Whittier, La Puente, Azusa, West Covina, Rowland Heights, Valinda, Basset,
East Los Angeles, and Avocado Heights.
Collection
The collection is large and varied in order to meet the diverse informational,
educational and recreational needs of the many communities the Bookmobile
serves. Materials are geared toward the interests of all age groups. Available
to our customers are books, musical cassettes and compact discs, movies (in
both VHS and DVD format), audiobooks, and periodicals.
Services
A "library on wheels", the Urban Outreach Bookmobile provides service to the
County's more heavily populated urban areas, where library services are not
conveniently available. The Bookmobile circulates books and audiovisual
materials (English and foreign language), provides reference services, and
sponsors adult & children's programming (including the annual Summer Reading
Program, bookmark contest, & other special programs). The Urban Outreach
Bookmobile also participates in community programs and events.
Facilities
The Urban Outreach Bookmobile was commissioned in 1999. The Bookmobile's
construction reflects the latest in bookmobile manufacturing technology,
featuring a bright, spacious, and welcoming interior, remote on-line computing
capability, and a book capacity of 2,500 volumes. In the interests of
accommodating all our customers, the Bookmobile is wheelchair accessible.
