FERNANDEÑO / TATAVIAM TRIBE

The Fernandeño/Tataviam Tribal Council is the governing body for the Fernandeño/Tataviam Tribe a Native American tribe of the Antelope, San Clarita and San Fernando Valleys in California. Today the Tribe still uses the word Fernandeño which the Spanish soldiers and missionaries call the band of Mission Indians at the San Fernando Mission. The word Tataviam is the traditional name of the tribe, which means 'People Facing the Sun'. Check out their web site to find out more about them: http://www.tataviam.org/

GABRIELENO/TONGVA NATION
The original people of Los Angeles

"Tongva" means people of the earth, in the Tongva language. "Gabrieleno" comes from the name given them by the Spanish missionaries when the Tongva were sent by the Spaniards to the Mission San Gabriel.

The Tongva occupied the entire Los Angeles basin and the islands of Santa Catalina, San Nicholas, San Clemente, and Santa Barbara. From Topanga Canyon to Laguna Beach, from the San Gabriel mountains to the sea, they lived throughout most of what is now Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The existence of the Tongva on these ancestral lands has been unbroken since long before the first contact between the Tongva and Europeans.

Visit the official web site of the Gabrieleno/Tongva Tribal Council to learn more about their history and their present: http://www.tongva.com/
