MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the County of Los Angeles Public Library Volunteer Corps is to augment and complement Library staff in meeting the informational, educational, and recreational needs of a highly diverse public through a network of community-focused libraries.
Volunteers are important in providing quality service to residents of our communities. It is our goal to recruit, train, utilize, and recognize individuals who will be a part of the County of Los Angeles Public Library's Volunteer Corps. As a Library Volunteer Corps member you will help enhance and expand the different programs offered by the County of Los Angeles Public Library. For this reason, volunteers with a variety of skills, interests and abilities are needed to work with staff as a team devoted to enriching the lives of others.
Community members of all ages are encouraged to get involved with the Public Library. As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to work a flexible schedule. If you have some time to spare, or a talent you wish to share, contact the County of Los Angeles Public Library. Please contact your local library or the Volunteer Programs Office at (562) 940-8559.

- The staff benefit because Library Volunteer Corps members provide staff with supplemental team members who are there because they want to help.
WHO VOLUNTEERS?
Community members are encouraged to get involved by volunteering for the County of Los Angeles Public Library Volunteer Corps. Volunteers with a variety of skills, interests, and abilities are needed to work with Library staff as a team devoted to enriching the lives of others. Library Volunteer Corps members may include: individuals, scout groups, youth and community service organizations, philanthropic organizations, corporations and public services workers.
WHAT DO VOLUNTEERS DO?
A variety of volunteer opportunities are available with the County of Los Angeles Public Library. Listed are just a few ideas: shelving books and other materials, emptying book returns, mending and repairing library materials, providing clerical support, assisting with crowd control, providing homework support, and answering telephones.
Library Volunteer Corps members are expected to:
- Complete the appropriate paperwork and interviews.
- Attend an orientation/training session to learn about the Library, and the specific tasks you will be performing.
- Observe the organization's guidelines.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Clerical Tasks: Assisting the Library staff with maintaining the collection such as filing, typing, shelving, mending books, cleaning materials, labeling, emptying book drops and answering phones. Treating books and magazines for library security system.
Youth Services: Assisting with children's programs, craft preparation, after school crowd control, and the Grandparents and Books (GAB) Program. Providing tutoring services for children who need assistance with homework.
Outreach Services: Providing book delivery to shut-ins. Assisting with community events; going to local health centers and reading to parents and children while they wait for service, and giving them an opportunity to obtain a Library card. Operating library booths at various community fairs.
Public Services: Providing directional assistance in the library by giving customers tours of the library and pointing out where all materials are located. Also, answering questions about the various services that the local library offers. Offering customers hands-on assistance with the computers and the Internet workstations.
Literacy: Provide tutoring to adult students one-on-one or in small group instruction, learning basic literacy skills, facilitating small group instruction for English as a Second Language (ESL) conversational groups; assist in literacy centers with: family literacy workshops, tutor support meetings, matching tutors with students and telephone networking with tutors and students.
Facilities/Environment: Providing minor landscaping or other tasks not covered by County contract. Physical library upkeep inside and outside, recycling, upkeep of plants, organizing and maintaining community bulletin boards, handouts and brochures.
Professional Services: Professionals who donate their services, (e.g. graphic artists, architects, grant writers, and companies or organizations which donate their services).
Locations: 84 community libraries and four bookmobiles throughout Los Angeles County.
