Free Summer Tutoring for Grades 1 – 6

We’re excited to offer FREE in-person tutoring at many of our locations this summer! Students in grades 1 – 6 can get semi-private tutoring (groups of 2 students per tutor) in reading and/or math by professional tutors.

We are offering two 4-week tutoring sessions, which run Tuesday – Thursday each week. Participants must sign up for a 30-minute appointment for all 3 days every week, during the 1:30 – 5 pm time block.

Students being tutored are welcome to stay at the library throughout the Summer Stars afternoon time block each day and participate in scheduled enrichment activities in addition to their tutoring appointment.

Appointments are filled on a first come, first served basis, based on library and program capacity.

*No tutoring will be held on June 19 and July 4 as all LA County Library locations will be closed for Juneteenth and Independence Day holidays.

Online Tutoring

Is your local library not offering Summer Stars, or are sessions full?

We offer online tutoring for students in grades K – 12 via Brainfuse, available 24/7 in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Tutors cover math, science, English, social studies, essay review, and more! Learn more about this and other resources at our Students page.

The Summer Stars tutoring program was established thanks to a County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors motion, authored by Supervisor Janice Hahn, which was unanimously approved in October 2023 to be implemented starting summer 2024.

Tutoring is also being provided in response to requests from parents and caregivers at past Community Feedback Sessions held by LA County Library in 2016 and 2022. Summer Stars is designed to help students shine brighter academically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can students attend both the Reading and Math 4-week sessions?

Depending on availability, it may be possible to sign-up for a 4-week Reading tutoring program and a 4-week Math tutoring program.

Am I guaranteed a tutoring session if I fill out the Interest Form?

Sessions are first come, first served, depending on availability. We will contact you if we are able to accommodate your student this summer.

How many tutoring appointments does my child need to attend?

Students must attend every tutoring appointment, 3 days each week, Tuesday – Thursday during their selected 4-week session(s). It is important not to miss any tutoring appointments, so that your student can make improvements in their learning during this short 4-week program.

When is my student’s first tutoring appointment?

Once a parent or guardian fills out the online Interest Form, if a tutoring appointment is available, they will receive an email within a few days with their student’s first tutoring appointment details. The student’s parent or guardian must sign an agreement during that first appointment* so that the student has permission to participate in the tutoring program.

*Exceptions can be made for special situations. Forms can be sent home with students after the first appointment and must be returned before the second appointment.

Does the student have to stay for the entire 3-hour tutoring period?

Students do not have to stay for the entire 3-hour Summer Stars time period (1:30 – 4:30 pm). Tutors will provide enrichment activities for students during Summer Stars hours.

What happens if my student misses an appointment?

We have a limited number of tutors and appointments, so for the success of your student please try to make all appointments. If there are multiple absences or the student can no longer participate, we will place another student in the tutoring slot.

Can a parent or guardian be present during tutoring?

Though not required, parents or guardians are welcome to stay during the tutoring appointment and pick up their student when they are done.

Do I need to bring food and drink for my child?

LA County Library will be providing a small snack during the program and accessible drinking fountains. Students are welcome to fill their personal water bottles during the day.

Who will be tutoring my student?

LA County Library has contracted with the tutoring company StudentNest to provide professional tutoring services this summer. They have provided tutoring throughout the United States for more than 20 years. Learn more about them here.
