History
The Compton Library branch of the Los Angeles County Free library
opened its doors in July of 1913, the 11th branch of today's County
of Los Angeles Public Library. The library was located in a storefront
building near Main and Tamarind Streets and was later moved to the
Compton Union High School at 212 S. Acacia Street. In 1925 a separate
building was erected in the City Hall Park at 123 W. Almond Street,
where it remained until 1974, when the current facility was dedicated
at 240 W. Compton Boulevard.
Collection
The Compton Library currently has over 104,000 books and magazines,
and 13,000 audiovisual materials, including videos, DVD's, cassettes
and CD's. Specialty collections include 16mm films on African American
history and the Multicultural Collection highlighting African American,
Latino and Samoan cultures.
Services
The Compton Library offers adult, children's and Spanish language
materials, reference service, a Homework Center,
2 study rooms (3 person capacity), public computers with Internet access and word processing capabilities,
seasonal family programming, and a public multipurpose
room. The staffed Homework Center has four
computer workstations with Internet access, word processing capability,
and various games for young children.
Facilities
Compton Library is a 20,000 square foot facility on a 1.5 acre lot,
located in the Compton Civic Center.
