History
The Culver City Library was established April 1, 1915 in the new Pacific
Electric Railroad Depot. The library moved to various locations throughout
the city as it grew in size over the years. The library has been in its
present location since 1971.
In January 2001, the Culver City Library was renamed the Culver City Julian
Dixon Library by the Board of Supervisors in recognition of Julian Dixon,
the representative for the 32nd United States Congressional District. The
Honorable Julian Dixon, who passed away on December 8, 2000, spent many of
his years in public service working closely with educational
institutions and libraries that positively impact the lives of children.
Collection
The Culver City Julian Dixon Library has adult and children's materials in
English with collections in Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese.
The library contains 248,625 books, 315 magazine and newspaper subscriptions
as well as substantial collections of videocassettes, audiocassettes and books
on tape and compact discs. The Culver City Julian Dixon Library also provides
books in large print, telephone directories, college catalogs, pamphlets and
topographic maps. The library maintains a Judaica Collection and serves as
the Fiction Library for the County Public Library.
Services
The Library offers reference and readers' advisory assistance, electronic databases and other online information, public access Internet computers as well as a self-serve station for making computer reservations, WiFi, a microform reader/printer, photocopiers, a Homework Center, and library programs for all ages. The Culver City Friends of the Library sponsor an ongoing used book sale. The meeting room is available on a rental basis.
Facilities
The library building is 21,406 square feet on one floor. There is a meeting
room with a capacity to seat 80 available for rent. Parking is available at
the rear of the building. The
Japanese Garden in front of the
library was a gift from Kaizuka, Japan, a sister city of the city of Culver
City in 1974.
